Tracking horses: names to note, including a promising second rookie | Horse racing news

Welcome to Winners In Waiting, our weekly roundup of all the horses rated as runners to watch by our expert racing readers.

The team monitors – and writes descriptive in-race commentary for – every horse racing in Britain and Ireland.

There are three different categories, each tied to a specific running comment which is used to designate which ones seem most interesting going forward.

Members’ Club Ultimate subscribers can add the names of mentioned horses to their Racing Post Horse Tracker and will then receive email alerts when they are registered or re-declared.

When they next start, horses will be flagged in Signposts, which can be found in the Racing Post newspaper or online as part of the members club on race day.

Non-members can sign up here to get the tracker, race replays and in-depth race analysis, plus exclusive content from our team of tipsters and writers.

Did well under the circumstances

Arab ash
Fifth, Wolverhampton, May 23

Didn’t have much running and in the circumstances did well to be beaten just over two lengths. She entered Goodwood on Friday.

Corner Billy
Second, Newcastle, May 24

He would surely have come close to taking four wins on the course had he not been held back behind a wall of horses after a modest start, even managing to secure second place. He’s in Catterick on Friday.

hope probe
Third, Chepstow, May 27

Gave himself a lot to do with a poor start but made a decent fist out of it, running late without threatening the winner. He ideally needs another furlong and can earn something similar.

Draws attention

Nusa Dua
Second, Bath, May 24

Really caught the eye on a long drive back and started the handicaps on a high. She should prepare for it and enjoy an even tougher test.

bantry
Second, Gowran, May 24

Took a big step forward from his first handicap attempt at Roscommon, putting up a strong finish and failing by just a neck to get up. It could benefit from a step up to a mile.

Lady Lavine
Fourth, Redcar, May 26

Finished with a bang despite a rough patch on her racetrack debut and she’s worth noting next time around.

Skip James
Third, Fairyhouse, May 27

Should benefit immensely from this first experience. He was green in the preliminaries and in the race he slowly slipped away, but he made up a lot of ground on the straight. He wasn’t roughed up when his chance to win was gone.

Reshoun
Fifth, Haydock, 28 May

A complete stayer, he’s caught the eye under quite considerate handling on a trip that’s bare minimum minus the headgear. He is on the same note as when he won the Ascot Stakes last year by an extra mile at the reunion royal and will likely be back for another bid next month.

Rich rhythm
Third, Salisbury, May 28

The only newcomer to the race, ran to the green early but would surely have come close to winning had he not been stopped in his run at a crucial moment.

Promising

Case closed
Second, Carlisle, May 27

Cost 160,000 gns as a yearling and was a warm order for his debut [8-11 SP] and he shaped in promising fashion despite failing to justify the trust. The way he moved up from an above average filly marks him as a bright prospect and he should have little trouble picking up a similar event before moving up the ranks.
